This novel in stories tracks 10 years in the life of Susan, a journalist and feminist, during a time of transition in America.
Susan is an activist. And yet, though her political ideals form the center of her life, she questions her convictions. At the heart of this string of interconnected stories are tensions among ideas, feelings, and action. Miner deftly interweaves Susan's story with the tales of women whom Susan will never meet. The result is a textured and enveloping book that creates a sense of universality.
Written with a deep understanding of activism, Miner's novelistic retrospective of the feminist movement questions everything from marriage to Marxism. This fascinating work gives a true and unflinching view of what it means to be a woman in the world.

First of all this book was a eye opening book that really allowed me to see things in a different perspective.. I could only give it five stars but that rating does not do this book justice.. Reading this book has opened me to continue to educate myself on topics of politics and the involvement of women in politics.. I recommend this book to everyone but especially women interested in not only the role of women in the 1960 to current but to women who are interested in the teachings of Angela Davis.Product details

Movement A Novel In Stories (Audible Audio Edition) Valerie Miner Crystal Sershen Audible Studios Books Reviews
Not impressed.
Angela Davis (born 1944) is a political activist, educator and author, who was famous/infamous in the 1960s/1970s for her membership in the Communist Party USA, as well as her asociation with the Black Panther Party. She is also a retired professor with the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz and is the former director of the university's Feminist Studies department. She has also written Angela Davis An Autobiography,Are Prisons Obsolete?, and Women, Race, & Class.
She notes in the "Acknowledgements" section of this book (published in 1989) that "My mother remarked that since I had the habit of devoting so much of my time to the preparation of speeches, I should consider publishing them in book form."
Here are some quotations from the book
"If the first wave of the women's movement began in the 1840's, and the second wave in the 1960's, then we are approaching the crest of a third wave in the final days of the 1980's." (Ch. 1)
"The process of empowerment cannot be simplistically defined in accordance with our own particular class interests. We must learn to lift as we climb." (Ch. 1)
"Moreover, as has been pointed out in studies on sexual assault---and as indeed was the case during the era of slavery---proportionately more white men rape Black women than Black men rape white women." (Ch. 3)
"Peace is a sisters' issue too." (Ch. 6)
"If we as Black people in the United States want to guarantee that the dream for a better life is realized through our children, we must recognize the importance of setting our sights on a socialist future." (Ch. 7)
This was a gift and the recipient really enjoys it!
Awesome collections of essays on the meaning of being black and female in the world and America. One of my favorite authors.
Super relevant.
Captivating.
